Catholic Right for Obama

Many of you may have heard this summer about Doug Kmiec, a prominent Catholic republican, and a professor of law at Pepperdine University. For years, Kmiec has been an outspoken voice in the Catholic community advocating for the religious right, specifically on pro-life issues. Recently, however, Kmiec has defected from working on the Romney campaign, to endorsing Sen. Barack Obama. This move has ostracized him within the religious right community, even to the point where he was denied communion. I think Kmiec's defection reflects a growing understanding among religious voters that single-issue voting is foolish, because no issue stands alone, unaffected by things such as the economy, the environment, and health care. This is not to say that all democrats have got it right. Rather, organizations such as the Beatitudes Society and all their affiliate organizations have done their job in breaking down the right's monopoly on religious voters.
